কোনো কিছুর খুবই সামান্য, নগণ্য অথবা ক্ষুদ্রতম পরিমাণ বা রূপ বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়। এটি সাধারণত গম্ভীর বা সাহিত্যিক ভাষায় ব্যবহৃত হয়।

‘the merest hint’, ‘the merest suggestion’ ইত্যাদি মূলত সাহিত্যিক বা আনুষ্ঠানিক লেখায় ব্যবহৃত হয়, সাধারণ কথোপকথনে নয়। খুব সামান্য কিছু হলেও তার বড় প্রভাব বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
