'메이트(mates)'는 친구나 동료를 의미하며, 주로 함께 경험을 공유하는 사람들(예: 학급 친구, 팀원)을 가리킵니다.

영국, 호주, 뉴질랜드 영어에서 주로 사용됩니다. 미국에서는 ‘friends’를 더 많이 씁니다. ‘classmates’, ‘teammates’와 같이 자주 결합하며, 연인 관계에는 쓰지 않습니다.
