誰かを他の人への警告として厳しく罰すること。ルールを破るとどうなるか示す目的がある。

主にマイナスな意味で使われ、公開的または示威的な罰を指します。'set an example'（お手本となる）とは意味が異なります。教師や上司が使うことが多い表現です。
