誰かや何かを驚かせたり攻撃したりするために、隠れて静かに待つこと。

物語や犯罪、動物の狩りの場面など、やや文語的または正式な場で使われやすい言い回しです。普通の「待つ」とは違い、隠れて驚かす意図があります。
