“Lay off”在商業英語中較常用,語氣半正式,意指因商業原因而被裁員,並非員工有錯。常見被動語態:'I was laid off.' 不同於“fire”(因違規或表現差被解僱)。在口語中,還可用來讓別人“別再做某事”,如'Lay off the sweets!',但這和工作無關。
