“Lay off”在商务英语中较常用，语气半正式，通常指因经济原因被裁员，不是因为员工失误。常见被动用法：'I was laid off.' 不同于“fire”（因违规、表现差被解雇）。口语中还有“别做某事了”的意思，如'Lay off the sweets!'，但和工作无关。
