Se utiliza para introducir una alternativa o excepción, o para sugerir algo posiblemente aún más fuerte o probable que lo anterior.

Muy común en inglés hablado y escrito. Suele marcar contraste o énfasis: 'He is good, if not great.' Puede significar 'a menos que' si inicia una condicional. Se usa para suavizar o aumentar gradualmente lo afirmado.
