Definition
Um hífen é o traço curto (-) utilizado para unir palavras ou separar sílabas, como em 'bem-estar' ou 'ex-aluno'.

O hífen não é igual ao travessão (– ou —), que é maior. Habitual em palavras compostas, divisão de palavras nas linhas e em alguns números de telefone. Não confundir com underscore (_) ou sinal de menos.
