家の屋根の最上部のことで、多くの場合、家を覆っている平らな部分や傾斜した部分を指します。

「housetops」は詩や古い文献で使われるやや文語的な表現です。現代では「rooftops」が一般的です。「shout from the housetops」は皆に知らせるという意味で使います。
