悪臭を避けるために鼻をつまむこと。比喩的には、嫌だけどやらなければいけないことをするという意味でも使う。

実際に悪臭を避ける使い方と、嫌なことを仕方なくやる比喩的な使い方がある。「hold your breath」とは意味が違うので注意。
