直接には言わず、何かをそれとなく伝えたりほのめかしたりすること。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

気持ちや計画、悪い知らせなど、話題を遠回しに伝えたいときによく使います。「hint at a possibility/problem/relationship」のように抽象名詞とよく使います。
