蝶番は、2つのものをつなぎ、一方が開いたり閉じたりできる可動部です。比喩的に、物事の成否がかかっている重要な要素を指すこともあります。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

名詞として使う場合は主にドアや箱などの物理的な蝶番を指します。比喩的に“hinges on”は「〜次第である」「〜にかかっている」という意味になります。動詞としては稀。
