É frequente em contextos formais, científicos e médicos ("harmful chemicals" = "substâncias químicas nocivas"). Usa-se muito com "to" ("harmful to health" = "nocivo para a saúde"). Não confundir com "dangerous" (perigoso); "harmful" pode indicar efeitos mais subtis ou duradouros.
