오랜 기간 일한 후 직업이나 주요 활동을 그만두다, 즉 은퇴하다.

비공식적이고 관용적인 표현으로, 주로 오랜 세월 일한 후 은퇴할 때 쓴다. 임시직에는 잘 쓰지 않는다. 다른 역할에 대해 농담이나 비유로도 사용('hang up my hat as...'). 아주 격식 있는 상황에서는 피하는 것이 좋다.

After 40 years as a teacher, she decided to hang up her hat.
