किसी व्यक्ति या उसके व्यवहार और रूप-रंग को शिष्ट, सभ्य और अक्सर थोड़ा औपचारिक या पुराने ढंग का बताने के लिए इस्तेमाल होता है।

Usage Notes (Hindi)

यह औपचारिक और साहित्यिक शब्द है; कभी-कभी दिखावे या पुराने ढंग के शिष्टाचार के लिए भी इस्तेमाल होता है। अक्सर 'society', 'manners' और आलोचना ('too genteel for this job') के साथ आता है। इसे 'gentle' (कोमल) या 'courteous' (शिष्ट) से न मिलाएँ।
