"Franjas" são bordas decorativas feitas de fios ou tiras, ou as áreas mais exteriores de algo. De forma figurada, "fringes" pode referir-se a pessoas ou grupos fora do centro de uma sociedade ou organização.

Em inglês, "fringes" é muitas vezes usado para falar de bordas decorativas ou de pessoas fora do centro ("on the fringes of society"). Não equivale a "franja" do cabelo em português europeu.
