'Filament' শব্দটি বৈজ্ঞানিক ক্ষেত্র, যেমন বৈদ্যুতিক বাল্ব, উদ্ভিদবিজ্ঞান, বা জীববিদ্যায় বেশি ব্যবহৃত হয়। সাধারণ দড়ি বা মোটা সুতো বোঝাতে ব্যবহার হয় না।
