결투경쟁

Definition

두 사람이 정해진 규칙이나 무기를 가지고 공식적으로 싸우는 것. 현대에는 두 상대가 치열하게 경쟁할 때도 쓰인다.

주로 역사적·문학적 상황에서 공식 결투를 가리키며, 최근에는 'dueling banjos', 'dueling speeches'처럼 강한 경쟁을 뜻할 때도 쓴다. 일상 대화에서는 많이 쓰이지 않는다.

The students were dueling for first place in the competition.

학생들은 대회 1등을 두고 **경쟁하고 있었다**.
