二人の間で正式なルールのもと行われる戦い。また、現代では激しい直接対決や競争にも使われる。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

歴史的・文学的な正規の決闘を指すことが多い。現代では「dueling banjos」「dueling speeches」のように、二者間の激しい競争にも使われる。日常会話で頻繁には使われない。
