주로 사람, 사회, 이상 등에 대해 현실을 깨닫게 할 때 사용하며 포멀한 느낌. 'be disillusioned with/by'는 '에 환멸을 느끼다'로 번역. 단순히 실망시키는(disappoint) 것과는 다름.
