電車が線路から外れてしまうこと、または物事や会話が本来の流れから逸れてしまうこと。

会議や会話などが本題からそれる場合によく使います。'議論が脱線する' や '脱線を防ぐ' のように使われます。日常会話・ビジネス両方で使います。

The train was in danger of derailing during the storm.
