조금 젖게 하거나, 감정이나 흥분 등의 강도를 약하게 만드는 것.

천, 땅을 살짝 적시거나, 감정이나 열정이 식을 때 쓴다. 'dampened spirits'는 기분이 가라앉았다는 뜻.

The towel was dampened before cleaning the table.
