Definition

サイクロンは、強い風と大雨を伴う回転する大型の嵐で、通常は暖かい海の上で発生し、陸地に大きな被害をもたらします。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

『サイクロン』は主にインド洋や南太平洋地域の暴風を指し、同じ現象でも大西洋では 'hurricane'、東アジアでは 'typhoon' と呼ばれます。'tropical cyclone'や'cyclone warning'などの表現で使われます。小規模な嵐には使いません。
