전쟁이나 적에게 붙잡혀 강제로 억류된 사람들을 의미합니다. 주로 그들의 의사와 상관없이 잡혀 있습니다.

주로 공식적, 문학적, 역사적 맥락에서 사용됩니다. 'take captives'(포로로 잡다), 'release captives'(포로를 풀어주다)와 같이 쓰입니다. 동물에게는 사용하지 않습니다.
