Definition

誰かを突然止まらせる、普通は驚きやショックのためにそうさせること。

主に書き言葉や物語で使われます。受動態（'was brought up short'）でよく見られます。感情的や予期しない中断を表し、日常的なちょっとした停止には使いません。

The news brought him up short.
