특히 숨어 있거나 물속에 있다가 갑자기 나타나거나 떠오르는 것을 말함. 사람, 사물, 아이디어 등이 예기치 않게 등장할 때 사용됨.

다소 비격식적이며 예상치 못한 등장에 자주 사용됨. 실제 물에서 올라올 때뿐 아니라, 대화나 생각에서도 쓰인다. 영국, 호주 영어에서 특히 많이 씀.
