焼いたり汚したりして何かを黒くすること。また、偽りや不当な話で誰かの評判を落とすこと。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

物を黒くする時は「黒くする」を使い、評判を落とす場合は「中傷する」「評判を落とす」とも言う。日常会話では評判の意味ではあまり使わない。
