歯で何かをかみ切ること。比喩的に、できる以上の仕事や責任を引き受けることも意味します。

直訳は歯で噛み切ること。比喩表現では“bite off more than you can chew”がよく使われ、できないほどのことを始める意味で使われる。単なる“bite”と混同しないように。主に口語で使う。
