クライミングで、仲間を落下しないようにロープで支えたり固定したりすること。他に、物をロープでしっかり縛る意味もある。

主にクライミング関連で使われる言葉。日常会話で使うことはほとんどない。「belay device」「belay partner」など複合語にも使う。
