攻撃や望ましくない接近を力で防ぎ、撃退すること。時に何かを強く断る意味でも使われる。

主にフォーマルや軍事的状況で使う。英国英語のくだけた表現では卑猥な意味にもなるので注意。よく使われる形は 'beat off an attack'。
