城や要塞の屋上にある、防御のための壁や手すりで、定期的な隙間が設けられていることが多い。

主に歴史的な建築物や城などについて使われます。「crenellated battlements」は凹凸のある防御壁を指します。日常会話ではほとんど使いません。
