過去の特に困難でつらい、問題の多かった時代を指し、今の方が良いと比較する時によく使います。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

昔に比べて今は良くなったことを懐かしんだり、安堵したりするときに使います。必ず過去の時代について述べる表現であり、'the bad old days'のように'the'と一緒に使うことが多いです。現状には使いません。
