下級裁判所の判決に不服があり、上級裁判所に審理を求める人や当事者。

法廷・法律文書でのみ使われる形式的な用語です。「控訴人の主張」「控訴人の意見書」などの表現でよく使われ、日常会話では使いません。対義語は『被控訴人』です。
