这是一个连词，用来引出一个与句子另一部分形成对比或让结果显得出人意料的事实。意思接近“尽管”或“虽然”.

它在口语和书面语中都很常见，比“though”稍正式一些，而“though”更常出现在句末。不要和“but”一起重复表示转折：说 “Although it was late, we stayed”，不要说 “Although it was late, but we stayed”.
