自分の意思で何かをしないこと。特に投票しなかったり、特定の行動や食べ物を控えること。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

投票に関する場面でよく使われます（'abstained from voting'＝棄権した）が、食事や習慣に関して自制した場合にも使われます。「拒否する」とは違い、より中立的です。通常 'from' とセットで使います。

She abstained from eating sweets during the month.
