困難や苦労、つらい出来事が続く時期のこと。また、冗談や皮肉で人をからかう意味でも使われる。

主にカジュアルな会話で使う表現。「going through a hard time」は本当に大変な時、「give someone a hard time」は冗談や軽い皮肉で困らせるときに使う。文脈で意味が変わるので注意。

She is having a hard time at her new job.
