楽器や歌が正しい音程から外れていることを表します。また、周囲と合わない、調和しない場合にも使います。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に音楽で、楽器や歌声の調律が合っていないときに使います。比喩的に、集団や状況と合わない時にも使われます。反対は 'in tune'（音が合っている）です。
