この表現は、車や自転車などをちょっと走らせてみたり、軽く試して楽しむことを指します。また、何か新しいものを気軽に試すという意味でも使われます。

カジュアルな言い方で、特に乗り物に関してよく使います（例：「take the car for a spin」＝車でひとまわりする）。新しいものに気楽に挑戦する時にも使いますが、直訳ではありません。
