當某人或某物「不合適」或「格格不入」時，表示其在環境中顯得不適合或感到不自在，或某物不在該在的位置。

既可指物品放錯位置（'椅子不合適地放著'），也常用於形容人在某場合感覺格格不入。屬於口語用法。不要和 'out of order'（故障）混淆。

That chair looks out of place in this fancy room.
