'Lay off' is semi-formal and common in business English. It refers specifically to job loss for business reasons, not as a punishment. Often used in the passive: 'I was laid off.' Not the same as 'fire', which means being removed for poor performance or misconduct. Can also be used informally to mean 'stop doing something' ('Lay off the sweets!'), though this is unrelated to employment.
