너는 할 수 없었다

‘너는 할 수 없었다’는 과거에 무언가를 할 수 없었거나 허락되지 않았음을 의미한다. 정중하게 불가능함을 표현할 때도 쓴다.

대개 과거의 능력 부정이나 정중한 거절에 사용함. ‘너는 할 수 없다’(현재)와 혼동하지 말 것. 부드럽게 거절할 때 자주 쓴다.

You couldn't find your keys this morning.

오늘 아침에 열쇠를 **찾을 수 없었다**.
