Çok mutsuz, şanssız veya acınacak durumdaki insanları tanımlar. Aynı zamanda hor görülen veya acınan kişiler için de kullanılır.

Günlük konuşmada değil, daha çok klasik edebi veya resmi metinlerde kullanılır. 'poor wretches', 'miserable wretches' gibi çoğul yapılarla sık geçer.
