Definition

とても不幸でみじめな状況にいる人々や、軽蔑されたり哀れまれたりする人を表します。古い文学などでよく使われます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に古典文学や文章語で使われる表現で、日常会話ではほとんど使いません。「poor wretches」「miserable wretches」のように複数形で使われることが多いです。
