Definition

الفيل الأبيض هو شيء مكلف جداً لكنه غير مفيد، أو يصعب ويكلف الكثير للحفاظ عليه، كأن يكون مشروعاً أو هدية أو بناء يصبح عبئاً.

Usage Notes (Arabic)

تستخدم غالباً في حديث المشاريع أو الهدايا المكلفة عديمة الجدوى، وليست عن الفيلة فعلياً. أيضاً، هناك لعبة تبادل هدايا ‘الفيل الأبيض’ حيث يتبادل الناس هدايا طريفة أو غير مرغوبة.
