主に木材などが、保護や見た目を良くするために硬くて光沢のあるニスで覆われている状態。

木や光沢のある仕上げの物に使われることが多いです。「varnished table」など。比喩表現では、表面だけよく見せる意味にも使います。「painted」は塗料、「varnished」はニスなので混同しないこと。
