Definition
Em uma posição mais baixa do que outra coisa, muitas vezes diretamente coberta por ela. Também pode descrever um sentimento ou uma verdade escondidos sob o que aparece na superfície.

Geralmente funciona como preposição: 'underneath the bed'. Também pode ser advérbio: 'The shoes are underneath'. Soa um pouco mais expressivo ou enfático do que 'under'. Pode ser usado no sentido físico e no figurado, embora o figurado seja menos comum no dia a dia.
