何かや誰かを船から水中に投げ捨てること。比喩的に、何かや誰かを見捨てる、またはやめる意味でも使います。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

直訳は船に関する場面で使われますが、比喩では考えや人を見捨てる場面でよく使われます。やや口語的。'throw out'（捨てる）とは違う意味なので注意。
