액체나 소스가 더 걸쭉해질 때 쓰거나, 상황이 더 복잡해질 때 비유적으로 사용한다.

주로 음식 요리(특히 수프나 소스)에 쓰이고, 'the plot thickens'처럼 이야기나 상황이 복잡해질 때도 쓴다. 단단한 물건에는 잘 쓰지 않는다.

The soup thickens as it cooks.

수프는 끓일수록 **걸쭉해진다**.
