Bu ifade, başkalarını alaya almak isteyen kişinin sonunda kendisiyle dalga geçilmesini anlatır. Yani şaka yapanın şakası ona döner.

Genellikle bir şaka veya dalga geçme denemesi geri teptiğinde kullanılır. 'the joke is on you' gibi, kimin gülünç duruma düştüğünü vurgular. Konuşma dilinde ve espirili ortamlarda sıkça rastlanır.
