'Tail off' é informal e usado para vozes, números, atividades ou tendências que diminuem aos poucos. Não se refere a 'cauda' literal de animal. Aparece muito em formas contínuas: 'his voice tailed off'. Lembra 'peter out', que também indica desaparecimento gradual.
